(The following notes are collected works from Husky, first Enchanter Chronicler, and some exerpts from Garkin Gnoll's personal journal.)
The Enchanter Guildmaster succession.
Geesh was the original.
Year GuildMaster -- Mud Time held
43-45 Geesh (Ageless Gnome GM, Npc) -- Many years 45 Hyro (Sprite, brash, young, quick to temper, both cruel and kind, emotionaly unstable) -- A week 45 Olgad Gustavius (Gnome, older than the hills. A true hermit. Ancient and powerful.) --Several months 45 Phoxy (Sword demon. Evil, yet loyal.) -- A week 45 Kayne (High Elf, Devout Priest of Risla..Peacekeeper) -- Four days. 45-46 Olgad Gustavius (Eventually left the position to return to his peaceful existence in the mountains.) -- A year. 46 (Geesh, briefly) -- 3 days 46 Garkin (Gnoll, YOUNG. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- *Note-- Would like to mention Mikus the Blessed as the first player character GM from the old realm. Perhaps he could be one of the apprentices of Draxanar who went on to form the Guild of Enchanters and organize us. (In truth, he did a good deal of coding on the class.) Histories suggest that a great deal of time has passed since, then hundreds or even thousands of years, but our histories can only record all within living memory. On a sidenote, this suggests that the Entire Realm once thrived in distant times, with legends and histories that are now completely lost. Darke times fell apon us and all that remains is the name Mikus..
(..Husky’s writing becomes unintelligible here..You notice the bottom of the page is slashed by what seems to be clawmarks, and remember that he was a weretiger.)
(ooc) Be cool to assign darke months to the successions. You can use your own judgement on that..;)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------- (These writings are taken from Garkin’s personal journal..The penmanship is perfect, each letter completely formed, and there are no flaws in the page. How very ironic, you think to yourself, that this mode of communication for the stammering Gnoll is so flawless...)
Darkeday 1, 45 (During Olgad’s reign)
....Geesh is a fascinating creature. He reminds me in many ways of Olgad. The two could pass for brothers, truly--they look nearly identical. But where both are quiet and stoic, Geesh seems almost like one of the magical constructs enchanters are known for creating. Geesh seems ageless while Olgad appears ancient. And Olgad is, of course, a Legend among the Realm, perhaps the most powerful individual alive within the Land..And his strong tendencies to isolation truly set him apart from others.. Often literally. I understand that Geesh was a survivor of the Darke times that passed across the Realm. He always seems to return when the Guild is in need. He held the staff for several decades while the art of Enchantments was lost to the Realm. When the darke times ended, and Olgad emerged as a true Master of his craft, Geesh yielded the Staff and Widget immediately to him, recognizing the experience and wisdom within the hermit. In truth, I think only Olgad is fit to wield the staff and Widget of the Guild. His intentions are noble. His vast powers are tempered with greater wisdom and responsibility. As a foundering apprentice, I feel safe within the guild chambers and libraries. He does good work. I hope he holds the instruments of the Guild forever....
(Several weeks later..)
....I find myself fascinated by the craftmanship of the items of the Guild. Ours is the only guild that have two items associated with the Guild leadership. The Enchanter Widget and the white glowing staff. I have never touched or been able to probe the weapon for its properties, but I have heard much. It is of an unknown material and rumor has it, UNBREAKABLE by any item within the Realm! I have seen Olgad wield it against fearsome Demon Lords raging the city of Akkad. In one stroke, he used the staff to summon a powerful vaccuum which severed every limb on the body of the creature! It is truly a formidable weapon... I have heard it is a spellcaster’s bane, known to leave one’s mind stunned and confused, regardless of one’s level of concentration. Yet, I believe the Widget is the key to the power of the Guild. Any Enchanter can use their skills to create an even more formidable artifact. I’ve seen them! Blades that kill instantly.. Or weapons that cast spells normally forbidden to Enchanters. But the Widget best represents my chosen profession.. Overlooked. Deceptively weak. Simple. Defenive in nature. The widget is certainly an adequate piece of armour for the head.. But I sense more powerful auras coming from that than the staff. I would hypothesize that it is perhaps TWICE as old as the staff.. And I’m not sure if it was created by a mortal creature. I should like to see it, someday. And I wonder what would happen if two enchanters held the different tools.. Which would be Guildmaster?
46.... (Olgad’s Reign.) ....I learned something interesting today from a few whispering Journeymen in the hallways: The staff and Widget were sources of contention last year between two of the most powerful members of our guild: The sprite Hyro, Enchanter of Celeborn... And Sword-Demon Phoxy. It seems Olgad was not always the Guildmaster... There was a period a year or so ago when he tired of his post, yearning to for a simpler life in the Mountains. He yielded his title to Hyro. Hyro is rash, ambitious, and growing in power daily. His acts of kindness are reknowned..But his acts of hate are equal in magnitude. Today, he grew fed up with being ‘used’ by his peers. In an attempt to ‘prove’ the power of his profession, he runed the goblin fortress, slaying many. He worries me. A year ago, he held the staff...Curious to see what it was. He agreed to pass it to Phoxy.. Fighting was fierce..They nearly came to blows. (Mainly because Phoxy refused to return it to him and for all intents and purposes, he grew enraged, throwing a ‘tantrum’...) Kayne, an accomplished and devout Priest of Risla, took the items until the issue could be resolved. Finally, Olgad returned from his solitude to correct the situation. Peace has reigned within the guild since then, Hyro grudgingly backing down. Meanwhile, thefts grow within the Treasuries of the realm.. I’ve sent notes to Olgad, suggesting we impose a treasury restriction until Journeyman status.. And a Guild Dragon Engine to guard our items.
46.... (Autumn) ....At times, it does seem hard to believe I’ve only been studying in this Guild for six seasons. Time has passed so quickly. And promises to pass quicker in the months to come....
46.... (Late Autumn) ....I feared this day would come. Olgad has decided to return to mountains and begin his hermithood. This could not have come at a worse time. Hyro and Phoxy are the second most powerful Enchanters in the Realm, and they do NOT get along. The thefts of the guild have increased, and no one can be sure that anything placed in the locker will remain there. Weaker pets are being slain. We have outer security issues to worry about. And if Hyro takes up the staff.. I worry for the guild.
(Following day)
..I literally had no choice. Olgad left.. I heard horrible sounds of battle in the join room, and when I arrived, I found the severed arm of a troll, Hyro, the corpse of Geesh, and the Guildmaster items on the floor. I pleaded with him to let Geesh return with his special magics, explaining that with the current frictions between him and Phoxy, fighting wa inevitable. He looked amused at that. There we were..The two of us.. lowly Journeman, and a Master Enchanter. He picked up the items an regarded me for a moment. He’s only three feet tall, and I’m more than foot greater..But I felt he was looking down at me. He smiled again paternally. "Wear them", he said "Wh-what? H-have y-you l-lost your wits? He grinned, but it seemed a nightmarish one "It will be good for you. Use them. "I r-refuse, M-master. Th-this is n-no b-better an id-idea th-tha y-you w-wearing th-them He sighed, now exasperated. I noticed he was no longer smiling "Put them on now, or I will kill you. Just do it. I looked at him and considered him. He couldn’t possibly be serious. I douted it. And yet... And I was curious as to what powers the item had In short, I wore the items. Hyro resumed grinning. I felt somethin in myself change subtly, and a flurry of hails were thrown at me fro strangers throughout the Realm. Phoxy was satisfied.. She sent me telepathic message. Hyro was bored, and left. I’ll not forget wha happened then Olgad walked into the room, leaning on his gnarled staff. He looked a me, a mixture of paternal amusement and eagerness to resume his life. could tell he was extremely surprised that Hyro was not wearing thes items "Good show, old boy", he said. And then he made his way out of th Guild. That was the last time I would see him nearly half a year.. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- (A few scribbled notes by Husky the Prime Chronicler.
....Garkin founded the Council of Three..Hyro, Phoxy, and Gally. The leading enchanters in the realm. With their support he sets prices and guild policy. I wonder how old he actually is? He has never revealed this. Although I know he still uses the Council frequently to enact policy....
....The Trial was held late in the year... After Sunset, with all Enchanters I the realm attending. Garkin even allowed apprentices in the Treasury on this special occassion. Phoxy and Hyro swore under the teachings of Mycra and enchantment lore to their testimonies.. Both had the opportunities to present their proof. And Phoxy was able to produce a witness who had SEEN Hyro hire an assassin to slay Phoxy. In private council, all enchanters were amazed with the proof provided. Garkin has been given the responsibility of casting judgement... For the first time in Enchanter History, an Enchanter has willfully acted to cause the death of another of the fold...
-------------------------------------------------------------------------- (Garkin’s Journal)
....He called me for help, begging, and saying it was urgent. I knew something was wrong. I rushed to aid him, travelling quickly to where he was. Before arriving, I peered into the room. I will never tell a soul this, but I saw the trap he had laid for me. An explosive rune of incredible workmanship. It would be certain death. I knew it was luck that I came from this direction. He must be waiting in the path adjacent. If I averted his trap, I knew I would have to avert more clever ones in the months to come. He had become a danger to the Guild. How would I prove that he tried to kill me? I knew what had to be done. I informed the two other councilmembers to be ready for my death in a few seconds, and explained Hyro had just asked for urgent help.. And to be careful. I walked to my death.
....I now know the staff means nothing. He left it on my corpse and took the widget. He placed his enemies within the guild in bad standing. The staff faded out of my hands and into his the next day. Now is the time to end this and mobilize the realm. Let’s get our house in order. He is no longer an Enchanter. Now that I know I have the Council’s support, I should start with the Paladins....
-------------------------------------------------------------------------- (Husky’s final notes)
....Guilds within the realm have united over the issue..Many reluctantly, and still unable to believe what has happened. Hyro has gone into hiding. The enchanters have renounced his title, and although he holds the Guildmaster Widget, stolen from Garkin’s burnt body, he has been banished and exiled from the Guild. All search actively for him to return the items to Garkin Gnoll. Hyro has clearly gone insane. Perhaps he gained too much, too quickly. Perhaps Garkin’s decision to place him in bad standing for a month was too harsh. But to kill a guildmember outright...
....Garkin’s ear was found the next day. Rumor abounds as to what actually happened. The staff is back. The title is here.. And Gnoll has been abducted. Rumor also has it that Hyro was consumed by his own unstable, powerful magics... Kayne has been reborn and will again become the peacekeeper. The Council of Three, missing a third member, will leave it with this old friend of the Guild when (and if) Garkin returns...
-------------------------------------------------------------------------- 47 (Summer) ..Almost Two months after Garkin’s disappearance... (From Garkin’s Journal)
....I’ve lost my ear.. And two months of my life. They must have been using some sort of time magic to take me and only have two days pass in my perspective. I shall need to research protective ward runes more in the future. Even now, if they wanted to take me again, I would have no defense. After making my escape and returning to the Realm, I found Kayne had sadly passed away, and a young sprite when I had left had grown into a powerful enchanter who specialized in combat. Morningstar, the Warrior-Enchanter. He is wiser than Hyro, but has a short temper. I have gained much in the past three years.. But while I am better prepared, I am still young. What makes me a more suitable candidate than him?
....I have realized that I have changed.. I want to implement several ideas within the guild. I want to try to fill that leadership for my fellows. I want us to prosper. I want to wield that staff again...
....Morningstar grinned and tackled me in customary fashion apon learning of my return. So hard to believe someone so small could have grown so quickly. He had slain Euri the Mistress of Chaos and Clan Master during the past two months--clearly the most combatitive of our fold. I knew I had to approach him. I told him I wanted to resume my work as Guildmaster, and if he was unwilling to allow that, then to allow me the vacant position on the Council of Three. His response was unexpected. He came to me and grinned. He removed the items and passed them to me.
"I have faith in you", he said.
....And I think we’ve found the third member to fill the council of three..the Warrior-Enchanter. There is much to do. Set up Security within the Treasury, set guild standards on prices, announce the new Council, and appoint a historian to Chronicle recent events, to ensure they are remembered, and the lessons learned. To work with the Tinkers.. To unite the magic-wielders of Akkad and standardize Journeyman status...
Enough writing. Time to work.
